Kali

Kali is the Hindu Goddess of destruction and chaos. She is the most fierce form of the Goddess Shanti. Kali determines the “expiration date” of all things, hence the necklace of skulls. It is very rare that I pray to Kali, fortunately. The only recollection I have of addressing her is during the death of my great grandma, in hopes of aiding her spirit well. In my last piece of solely Hindu works, I decided to break away from the traditional figurism and showcase Kali in a more emotional way. When I think of Kali, I often think of her tales of guided anger and despair. I hoped to encourage a sense of rage from the viewer. This piece was also an experimentational one as well. I typically do not use colors, but here I decided to. I did not want to minimize the importance of Kali’s unusual blue skin or the red aura that surrounds her. I used color pencils and a bit of acrylic paint to complete this piece. In my last solely Hindu piece, I wanted to start falling into the rage and confusion I felt as a little girl when informed of the “sins” that I was committing for being Hindu.
