Lakshmi

Piece 1 of Portfolio: Lakshmi

Lakshmi is the Hindu Goddess of Wealth and Good Fortune. She is the wife of God Vishnu, and like many Hindu deities, is often seen taking many forms. My family and I prayed to Lakshmi whenever we bought a new house or car, whenever someone had an interview, or whenever we just needed some extra good karma on our side. In my mind she represented the responsibility and grace of the future. For my portfolio, I decided to tackle things in a chronological order, meaning that my first few pieces would solely represent Hindu beliefs, corresponding with the era where that is all I knew. I showcased Lakshmi in a traditional Hindu depiction, but used non-traditional style in order to represent that though my Hinduism was true, it was a bit westernized. Traditional Hindu portraits are often in water color or some form of paint. I showed my contemporary time frame by using a more distinct and precise medium: pen. I also decided to take inspiration from contemporary artists and include pops of color. I remained true to traditional Hindu art by keeping forms of symmetry, focal movement, and unproportional figures. The piece was dedicated to Lakshmi.
